Hello Dear reader,
I’m back to share something that has been sitting in my drafts. I got off the Instagram hamster wheel a while ago, and it feels liberating. I do need to get back on it soon (because, marketing!) but I intend to do it on my own terms.
I also intend to get back to writing more regularly, and will be back with updates shortly, but for now, here’s what I wrote a few weeks ago
“After this week, things will slow down a bit…”
We’re constantly producing
Or consuming
(or being consumed by worry)
Where is the space for stillness?
Space to pause and look up
To realise that we’ve been sold a lie
We’re kept so busy
Going from one distraction to the next to the next
Systems designed beautifully
Algorithms so clever
Keeping you sucked in
The stakes only get higher
the more you work, the more work you’re tasked with
The busier we are, easier it is to keep us from realizing
That we’re being sold a dummy
a fantasy
that we’re working towards our dream lives
When in reality we aren’t working towards anything
Dream life?
That dream is a lie
We’re hamsters on wheels
Governed by bigger hamsters on bigger wheels
We fret and fret
About finishing that document
meeting our next deadline
Measuring metrics -
engagement, impressions, followers
Impact!
Hustle, optimize, multitask
hyper-productivity, time-hacks
Stop.
Breathe, look outside your window
That snail is carrying on with its life
Life goes on, nature and its cycles
Zoom out
Zoom out further
You’re a tiny speck
On a small planet
In a small galaxy
Among billions of galaxies
Billions
Just a tiny speck
Fretting over
an inconsequential, abstract concept
in a GIANT universe.
This world isn’t going to end
If you stayed still
just for a moment
or three.
Breathe.
Lovely. My son and myself often talk/struggle about/with this. Glad to know it is on other peoples minds too.
